Socket welding flange(SW flange)

Socket welding flange, a popular type of pipe flange, is designed for higher pressure and small diameters pipeline, it has a shoulder in flange bore for pipe to insert it and do fillet welding.

Socket welding flange is manufactured similarly to a slip-on flange. However, the internal groove of the socket weld flange allows for a smooth bore and better fluid flow. When internally welded, this flange has static strength equal to that of a slip-on flange, but fatigue strength is 50% higher than that of a double weld slip-on flange.

This flange can easily achieve a smooth bore condition without the need to bevel the flange face or re-trim the socket weld flange after welding, which is required for slip-on flanges. Therefore, internal weld flanges are popular in chemical process piping.

Key Features:

- Socket weld flanges can replace threaded flanges, reducing the risk of leakage.

- The recess on the inside diameter of the socket weld flange allows for a good fit of the pipe allowing for a smooth flow of liquid.

- Welding occurs externally to the pipe, preventing penetration of the pipe bore.

- Socket welding flanges work well for smaller sizes and higher pressure temperature conditions.

- Socket weld flanges eliminate internal pockets, reduce the risk of warpage due to welding heat, and minimize damage to the flange face caused by the weld spatter.

- It offers the same internal pressure capacity as slip-on flanges while improving fatigue resistance.

- They are similar to slip-on flanges, but must specify the schedule of the pipe where they will be used for with socket welds.

Socket Welded Flange Face Types

Socket welded flange inlcuding RF type, RTJ type and FF type, which like other types of welding flanges (slip on, weld neck or blind flange).

RF (Raised Face) flange:

The raised face type features a small, raised area around the flange's bore. This raised area is typically 1/16 inch or 1/4 inch high, and it helps concentrate the sealing pressure on the gasket.

RTJ (Ring Type Joint):

The ring type joint flange has a groove around the flange face designed to hold a metallic ring gasket. This type is designed for high-pressure and high-temperature applications.

FF (Flat Face):

The flat face type has a flat surface that is even with the flange's face. This design is often used with a full-face gasket that covers the entire flange face.

Socket Weld Flange vs. Slip-On Flange:

A socket weld flange closely resembles a slip-on flange, but it distinguishes itself by having a shoulder within the inner bore.

FAQ

1. What is a socket weld flange?

A socket weld flange is a type of flange that is designed to be welded to a pipe. The pipe fits inside the flange, and the weld is applied around the joint, creating a strong, permanent connection.

2. How to Use

To use a socket weld flange, insert the pipe into the flange socket, align it properly, and then weld around the joint to create a seal. Ensure that the weld is clean and free of defects.

3. When should I not use a socket weld flange?

Avoid using socket weld flanges in high-vibration or high-temperature environments where thermal expansion might cause stress, or where the risk of cracking exists. They're also not ideal for applications requiring frequent disassembly.

4. How is Socket Welding Flange Generated?

Socket welding flanges are generated by machining a flange to include a socket where the pipe fits. The flange is then welded to the pipe at the socket joint, usually through a fillet weld.

5. What are the advantages of socket weld flanges?

Advantages include a strong, permanent connection with minimal risk of leakage, ease of installation, and suitability for high-pressure applications. They also provide a smooth interior surface that reduces turbulence.

6. How do I install a socket weld flange?

Align the pipe with the socket in the flange, ensuring proper fit and alignment. Weld around the joint, using a suitable welding technique to ensure a strong, leak-proof seal. Follow proper welding procedures and standards.
